Top five for Hayden at Grand Prix De Valcourt
Team Rockstar Energy Polaris Racing's Iain Hayden continued his march towards repeating as CSRA Pro Open Snowcross Champion at the Grand Prix De Valcourt snowcross classic in Valcourt, QC this past weekend.
Whereas a lack of snow proved to be a problem at quite a few of the races in Ontario so far this season, in Quebec an abundance of it greeted the drivers, racing crews and fans.
Hayden – coming off three consecutive weekends of finishing on top of the podium – snared a noteworthy fifth place in the internationally stocked field that included drivers from the SCMX as well as the ISOC racing organizations.
To keep the CSRA points chase under his control, Hayden poured on the gas to finish well ahead of his CSRA rivals on his potent Polaris IQ 600 sled, ending the weekend with first overall in that organization.
Qualifying heats were intense as the best drivers from the three different sanctioning bodies vied for a spot in the feature race of the day. In addition to Hayden, only three other CSRA drivers, including his teammate Lee Butler, found themselves in the final.
Hayden registered second place finishes in both his qualifiers, ensuring a top starting position for the final. Although he was in the top-five mix from the get-go, the rough Valcourt circuit had become a one-line track, making passing extremely difficult.
"We were looking for a top-five finish in the overall results and first in the CSRA lineup so I'm happy that we accomplished our mission," Hayden said. "I didn't want to push too hard, just hard enough to keep those points rolling in without getting into trouble."
Butler showed promise in his qualifiers, recording 2-4 results. A poor start in the final, however, saw him unable to battle his way into a top-10 finish. When all was said and done he settled for 12th at the checkered flag.
Butler's result still saw him collect valuable championship points for the CSRA title hunt, as 12th translated into third overall on the day for the CSRA organization.
"I kind of blew the start in the final and that was pretty well it. It was hard to make passes so my main concern was to keep the guys who were behind me, behind me," Butler said.
